Szakmai terepnap Dörgicsén/Fieldwork in Dörgicse

Június végén a Balaton-felvidéki Nemzeti Park Igazgatóság dörgicsei működési területén szakmai terepbejárás keretében láthattuk vendégül Dr. Geml József professzort, a MTA–EKKE Lendület Környezeti Mikrobiom Kutatócsoport vezetőjét, valamint Dr. A. Elizabeth Arnold professzort a University of Arizona School of Plant Sciences és Ecology & Evolutionary Biology tanszékeiről, továbbá Dr. Robert Steidl professzort az University of Arizona School of Natural Resources and the Environment intézetéből. Dr. A. Elizabeth Arnold szakmai munkájáról az Arnold Lab, Dr. Robert Steidl kutatásairól pedig az University of Arizona szakmai oldala nyújt további információt.

In late June, we had the pleasure of welcoming Professor József Geml, Head of the MTA-EKKE Momentum Environmental Microbiome Research Group, together with Professor A. Elizabeth Arnold of the School of Plant Sciences and the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Arizona, and Professor Robert Steidl of the School of Natural Resources and the Environment, University of Arizona, to a fieldwork held in the Dörgicse area of the Balaton Uplands National Park Directorate. Further information on Professor Arnold’s research is available through the Arnold Lab, while details of Professor Steidl’s work can be found on his University of Arizona faculty profile.

Professor A. Elizabeth Arnold is internationally recognized for her research on fungal ecology, biodiversity, evolution, and plant–microbe interactions. Her work focuses on the ecological relationships between fungi and plants, including the role of endophytic fungi and other microbial communities in ecosystem functioning.
Professor Robert Steidl is a conservation ecologist whose research addresses the monitoring of populations, communities, and ecosystems, as well as the ecological consequences of conservation management and human activities. His work is closely associated with long-term ecological monitoring, survey design, and the application of scientific evidence to conservation decision-making.
Professor József Geml‘s research focuses on the diversity and spatial organization of soil and plant microbiomes, with particular emphasis on mycorrhizal fungal communities. His research group uses environmental DNA (eDNA) and DNA metabarcoding approaches to investigate soil microbial and fungal communities, their composition, ecological interactions, and the influence of environmental and anthropogenic factors on community assembly.

A szakmai programban Mészáros András, a Balaton-felvidéki Nemzeti Park Igazgatóság természetvédelmi őre is részt vett, akivel alapítványunk közel két éve működik együtt természetvédelmi és monitorozási feladatokban.

The objective of the field programme was to provide a comprehensive overview of the application of trained detection dogs in ecological research and conservation-oriented data collection. As part of the programme, we presented the complete workflow used in surveys targeting hypogeous sporocarps of mycorrhizal fungi, including project planning, permitting procedures, the regulatory framework governing protected fungi and nature conservation activities in Hungary, criteria for selecting suitable dogs for ecological fieldwork, training principles related to target-scent detection and indication, and field documentation protocols. Through the work of Dáma (Agile Garde de la Vie), participants were introduced to the practical implementation of the method in the field. The demonstration included the localization of hypogeous fungi, the recording of occurrence data and geographic coordinates, and procedures associated with documentation and specimen collection. The programme was also attended by András Mészáros, park ranger of the Balaton Uplands National Park Directorate, with whom our foundation has been collaborating for nearly two years on conservation monitoring and field survey activities.

A terepi egyeztetés során kiemelt figyelmet kapott az eDNA-alapú talajvizsgálatok és a keresőkutyás termőtest-felderítés egymást kiegészítő alkalmazásának lehetősége. A két módszer eltérő forrásból származó információt szolgáltat: az eDNA-vizsgálat során vett talajminták molekuláris elemzésével a mintában kimutatható gombák jelenléte és közösségi összetétele vizsgálható, míg a keresőkutyás módszer célzottan a föld alatt található termőtestek felkutatására és pontos lokalizálására irányul. A keresőkutyás felderítés ezért nem véletlenszerű talajmintavételt jelent, hanem a kutya célszag alapján végzett keresésére épülő, konkrét termőtestekhez kapcsolható terepi módszer.

Particular attention was given to the complementary nature of eDNA-based soil analyses and detection dog-assisted surveys for hypogeous fungi. The two approaches provide fundamentally different, yet potentially complementary sources of information. Environmental DNA analyses are based on molecular data recovered from soil samples and can be used to characterize fungal taxa and community composition within the sampled substrate. In contrast, detection dogs are trained to locate hypogeous sporocarps directly through scent. Consequently, dog-assisted surveys are not based on random soil sampling but on the targeted localization of individual sporocarps. Integrating these approaches may facilitate direct comparisons between molecular data obtained from soil samples and field observations or samples associated with precisely localized sporocarps.
The meeting may represent an important starting point for future scientific collaboration. Through its experience in detection dog assisted field surveys and its methodology for the targeted localization of hypogeous fungi, our foundation can contribute complementary field data and sampling opportunities to molecular ecological research. We hope that the discussions initiated during this field workshop will contribute to the development of future collaborative research projects and scientific publications.

We would like to thank our guests for their visit, the inspiring scientific discussions, and the shared field experience.
